MR. VARDAMAN'S SUCCESSOR.

L. K. Atwood, Colored, Appointed to the Collectorship in this District.

A month or more ago Mr. W. S. Vardaman resigned the office of internal revenue collector for the southern district of Mississippi. A position he had faithfully, acceptably and creditably filled for several years, and forthwith the Republican politicians of the state began to scramble for the crumb thus thrown in their laps. It went without saying that a Republican would succeed the Democratic Vardaman, who is said by those in position to know, to have been one of the best officers the government ever had in this section. He has pursued the blind tigers, the wild cat distillers, the manufacturers of "mountain dew" and others who sought to do business on the q.t., with the persistence of the evil one, and has been the means of breaking up hundreds of such establishments. The office is an important one, pays a good salary and $800 travelling expenses, but the proper discharge of its duties are attended by many hardships and dangers, still it has been largely sought. Among the applicants was L. K. Atwood, a colored attorney of this city, and from the following telegram dated this morning at New Orleans, it will be seen he has "knocked the persimmon:"

"L. B. Moseley, Jackson, Miss.: I was sworn in for district lately held by Vardaman." L. K. ATWOOD.

Atwood is an intelligent, deserving negro, and the News congratulates him on his success. -Jackson News.
