WHAT HE DID SAY
was in reference to the marriage of "Hon." Haskins Smith to a white lady in Port Gibson. He said that if he was a single man, and he had won the affection of a white woman, and he wanted to marry her, and she wanted to marry him, he would take her to his heart and buckle on his armor to defend himself against an army of brothers or farthers, or words to that effect. He did not mean by that language to reflect upon any white lady in Vicksburg. He was too much of a gentleman to say anything that would reflect upon any lady. As for his part, he was
OPPOSED TO ANY AMALGAMATION OF RACES.
