Thus in the exciting and memorable election of 1875, we elected two colored men, Milton Littlejohn and Felix Eldridge, respectively Chancery and Circuit Clerk, the highest and most lucrative offices in the county. In addition to these there were two other colored men, Guilford Vaughn and Ned Hightower, elected on our ticket that year. In no county election during the past eight years have the Democrats of Panola county failed to nominate and elect, when they could, colored men. Through all these years we have been earnestly and persistently urging and entreating the colored people to affiliate with us politically. Though they heard, but few of them heeded us, and we had well nigh despaired of a successful effort with them, when, lo! even at this late day, they come to us and declare they will clasp hands and co-operate with us in honoring with official trust none but the best, ablest and truest men of both races.
