MSU falls to Belhaven

Mississippi State University's women's basketball team dropped a 53-50
decision to Belhaven College Saturday
afternoon before a crowd of 50 to 75 fans
at the Bulldogs Gym.
The lady Bulldogs, playing their first
game since early December, dropped to
a 1-2 season record, having trounced
Prentiss Institute in the season opener
before a 1-point loss to Mississippi
University for Women.
Although MSU outrebounded Belhaven
39-19, turnovers, fouls, and poor shooting
plagued the lady Bulldogs the entire
game. Mississippi State made only 37 per
cent of their shots, compared to 57 per
cent for Belhaven. The lady Bulldogs
committed 20 fouls while Belhaven made
19.
Belhaven-, with the shooting of Cynthia
Smith and Wanda Pevey, coasted to a
25-20 halftime lead. Mississippi State
pulled to within one point late in the
second half before running into foul
trouble that sealed the Belhaven victory.
Belhaven's Smith was the game's high
scorer with 17 points. Teammate Pevey
had 15. Tutti Calhoun and Dana Hathorn
paced State with 16 points apiece
followed by Susan Lennard with 12.

Despite the surprising loss, Coach
Birmingham was optimistic about the
team's future. "We played well
considering three of our starters didn't
come back to school this semester," she
said. "Once we get going and get a little
experience, we'll surprise a few people."
The lady Bulldogs now face a seven
game road stretch beginning Tuesday at
Blue Mountain. The next home game is
not until Feb. 3 when they face
Mississippi College at the Starkville High
School Gym.
