Black Counselor Pictures Role
As Mediator For All Students

This. year at Mississippi
state university, the counsellng
center nas created a new position geared toward the black
student and his needs.
James A. Kilgore, former
Dean of Student at predominantly black Mary Holmes College
has joined the staff at· MSU's
counseUng Center in the capacity of Advisor to minority
students. Kilgore who received
an undergraduate degree from
Morehouse College and a graduate degree in Counseling and
Guidance from Atlanta University, feels that he will be able
to contribute toward the growth
of many students at State.
When questioned concerning his
reasons in exchanging his position as dean of students for one of

that there is a greater challenge in a less prestigious job
at a university, where there is
more room for growth. He

Although Kilgore was hired

will not be limited to black
students. His job in the Counseling Center includes providing
social,
educational,
personal, and ·vocational guidance to any student. Already
Kilgore has counseled with as
many white students as black.

of a "technical" nature; he
hopes to perform as a medium

Yearbook Releases Deadline
For Nominating Beauties
The deadline for the Mississippi State University yearbook
beauty entries is Oct. 16.
Organizations sponsoring girls
for the elections are required to
submit three photographs of the
candidate, including one 8 by
10 gloss to Union Room 101 or
the Union Information Desk before the deadline, according to
Reveille editor, Ronnie Walton.
A committee of nine will choose
fifteen candidates on the basis
of beauty alone, Walton explaned.
The student body will vote on
those 15 girls in the Student
Association elections Oct. 26.

The nine-member screening
board as designated in the Student Association Constitution
consists of: Reveille editor; Re-
flector editor, Foots Thurman;
one Student Association officer;
one Associated Women Students
officer; one Panhellenic officer;
one Interfraternity Council officer; the Dean of students, Andrew Bond; the official MSU photographer, Jerry Moulder; and
the official photographer, Morris
Edwards.
Pictures of the 15 candidates
will be on display at the Union
information Desk, said Walton.
There will be no campaigning
for beauties after the fifteen
candidates have been chosen.

at an Associated Women Students
meeting Tuesday.

not feel that a counselor should

in order to help black students
on a counseling or advisory
basis. However, he believesthat,
in order to motivate Negro students, there must be ethnic models for tb~I_Il

"Young Negro students," he
stated, " have a definite need
to see black adults efficiently
performing as well as whites
in positions of responsibillty."

on the first floor of YMCA in
the Counseling

welcomes any student who
