My Dearest Darling Husband,

Guess you think I’m crazy, Sweet, for writing to you this evening but I want to see you so terribly bad. Since I can’t see you Honey, this is the nearest I can come to talking to you. To, I know I’ll see you before you could get this, because you told me to stop writing.

Sweet Darling, I’d go on and mail it anyway but I feel sure William knew what he was talking about when he said you had left China. I don’t see how you could get any more mail, Dearest!

Gosh! Precious, I’d give anything on earth if I could see you now. It’s nearly 5:30 and they’re already gone to milk. Go! Baby, I love you so much. If I could only know where you are now. These last 2 years and 3 weeks have been just plain hell without you, my Darling.

Just seeing Bill + Jeanne this evening has made me even more lonesome, Sweet. They came over about 2 o’clock and just left. For some reason Bill reminds me of you anyway, Darling. He’s gotten his artificial leg and foot and thinks he’ll get his discharge before long. Gee! Dearest, they’re so happy – By the way, Darling, last Sunday my Sunday School teacher, Mr. Merchant, asked me if you’d gotten home yet. He’s still with the campaign here in town and I’ve seen him several times around the central office driving a truck. Don’t know whether you even remember him or not Darling but he calls you Rhodes.

He’s had to work several Sunday’s lately and wasn’t there this morning. Bill is our substitute teacher and it seems funny to have an army lieutenant teaching the class.

Carol was sweet this morning, Sweetheart, but she didn’t go to sleep. She went to the cradle roll class with the other babies and Jeanne said she was awfully good. Honey, you’ll just love her to death- she’s so sweet.

Luther Darling, it’s almost church time again so I guess I’d better stop. Guess we’re all going again. This morning I dressed, the chickens, we went to church, came home then cooked dinner. She had just finished eating when Bill and Jeanne came.

Oh yes, Darling, Mrs. Lee said she’d be glad to call me when you call and if I’m at work they’re going to transfer it to the office. Gee! Sweetheart, how I hope I can see you soon.

I love you, Precious, with all my heart.

Your wife,
Fannye

July 18, 1944

Dear Folks,

I got your letters today and of course it was a great shock to me to hear about Billy. He certainly had a lot of bad luck, but you can certainly be proud of him. After what I’ve seen here, I know a little bit about what he went through. Also being here makes the news easier for me, because you can get more used to that kind of thing here. I hope you will try to take it in stride as well as you possibly can, because it worries me a lot when you are not well or when are worrying and blue. I want to see you both in the best of health when I get home.

I’m only sorry Billy didn’t live to see the start of the invasion. The boys down there certainly waited anxiously enough for it.

I’m not denying myself anything by sending money home. The more I have saved the better off I will be when this is over. There will be another $45 coming home at the end of this month. Besides, all the sightseeing I’ll do here will be on Uncle Sam. I hope he shows me Berlin pretty quick now.

If you want to follow the war more closely just read all the news about the 4th Division. That’s where you’ll find me. I wonder if Vernon Pace isn’t in the same? Quite by accident I found out he made the same moves in the States this division made.

I got ten letters from you today, the first mail I have gotten in six weeks. Of course only the last two had the new address. Also I got one from Sibber, two from Dave Cluley, and one from Dan Self.

You were right about me changing camps in England. I was in three different camps there.

Mother, it has suddenly dawned on me that you wrote me one letter I haven’t gotten yet. It leaves a few things blank, but I can just about fill in all the spaces. I appreciate the clippings very much, and hope you will continue to send them, even though I’m getting more news now.

James Sloan didn’t come over on the same ship as me, because I knew all the soldiers on board.

One thing about the lawn, Mother. I don’t care if it grows up to your neck, I don’t want you out cutting on it. Forget what people think. There’s plenty of time to mow the lawn later when the negroes will be glad to mow it. Don’t forget, if you need any of the money I’m sending home, go ahead and use it, a part of it or all of it.

If you don’t hear from me regularly you will know it is because the mail system is a little irregular. Just be patient and don’t worry. The letters will come.

And don’t worry about me. I’m taking care of myself, and never felt better in my life. You’re the ones who’ve got to be careful. I adjust myself pretty fast. Write as often as you can. It helps a lot to hear from home.

Love,
Frank

That’s the only thing have to keep me from writing, it won’t be long before will be back home and won’t have to write. Ah yes darling all most forgot about something sweet. Happen to run upon Horace tonight just before start to leave the other place. Did not get to talk to him but just a few min for he was on his way to the shop + I was coming over here to write you a few lines. He had just got in here darling + he say this corp was the worse place he had ever been in. And he had just got in here. Wait till he leaves this place Darling there is nothing to write about in this place. But I will try + write you a little after than what have you wrote you lately. I know I should have wrote you more but I hate to write so darn bad here lately.

Dearest Sweetheart,

We have arrived at our final destination. I cant say where it is but I can say that I am “somewhere in New Guinea.”

We are well fixed up. In fact, considering that our area was nothing but Jungle, and I mean Jungle, a short while back, we are exceptionally well off. I have had much worse in maneuvers many times. We really never did have as good. It is just about the same as Camp Blonding was except of course there is mud here instead of sand. We are right on a point out in the ocean and get a breeze if there is one at all.

A lot of mail was waiting for us here and I got two letters but neither one was from you or anyone at home. One was from [?] written 17th March and the other was from Gen. Woolfley written on 15th March. I am writing this letter mainly to let you know I got here safely and that I am well. And this is the last letter I am going to write until I start getting some letters from you. The other fellow’s wives have written them anywhere from 10 to 30 letters that they have received since we have been in this area. I know I love you as much as anyone could love another person and I don’t think you have treated me right. But if you don’t want to write, I cant help it. I would at least like to know why. Some letters that came in today were dated way up in April. Well I have said enough about mail. I wont say any more but neither am I going to write any more letters.

I went back ashore the day after I first saw Robert Meek and John B Crosby and was going to spend the day with them but I just saw Robert for a few minutes and was going to see him again later but we got a message and had to get back aboard ship at once. I may get to see him again later, also John B. Be sure to tell their people that they were both well and looking fine. I did not get to send the cable after all, and every one says air mail is just as quick anyway.

Lucius looks fine and is getting about like a switch engine. He seemed to be glad to see me. I am glad to be settled again, altho the trip was nice and pleasant but so long. You finally get tired of getting up every morning and having it look like the lever has busted.

I believe it would be a good thing for you to try to sell the typewriter. I paid $40.00 for it and believe you can get that much for it now. Ask [Jimmy?] Boyd to sell it for you. Maybe Everett needs one.

Please send me 3-4 cartons of Picayune cigarettes as soon as you can. The air mail might cost a lot but it would be worth it. Later you can send me some by regular mail but I might be 3 months getting them. Air mail letters to or from the armed forces overseas sill is only 6c instead of 8c. They issue us cigarettes now free. But I dont like them.

Tell Miss Lee, Cainie, and the others I think about them a lot and hope that they are well and have no troubles. Tell some of them to write the news of the town. All the scandal, etc.

Robert told me they had sent quite a few more of the young married set into the Army lately. Well it wont hurt most of them and most likely will do them some good.

Tell Lapsley to get you about 400 yds of good linen line of about 18 thread and you send it to me. There are lots of King Mackerel around here and I have a rod and reel I got over here, but I need some more line. Also get him to get me some hooks, wire leaders and swivels. He will know what sizes to get. Use this a s the request to mail them. I want them air mail.

I brought along about 3 times too much stuff and am going to have a lot of it sent home I believe I could get along on nothing but a Valpak.

Well I must close. Baby, I love you and sure want to hear from you often.

Love
Burris

P.S. You should have gotten some of my letters by this time.

                <text>Gettysburg, PA.
Camp Colt
JCMA 333 Bn. Co. C.

July 28, 1918

My dear sister,

Your letter calling my attention to the fact that I hadn’t sent a line to came two or three days ago and to you I am writing my first letter this Sunday.

I hardly know what to say now that I have begun.

I am in a company with Lieut. A.N. Horn a classmate of mine. Our battalion (Bn.) was the last to be organized and we have only half a company. Don’t know when it will fill. Soon though I hope. We are busy with fatigue duty about half the time – at least two days out of each week and we can’t progress as fast as we could if we had a full company.

The first three weeks I was assigned a company I went to the machine gun school. And am now a qualified instructor in the Marlin aircraft, Colt, Hotchkiss, machine guns and the 37mm. Don’t know when this company is going to start on machine guns.

Here is what we have to learn: Semaphore, wigwag, wireless, gas engines, machine guns, besides the infantry drill. We spend the morning drilling – take an hour and a half hike every morning. The afternoon we spend at school not very much different from being at A and M only we have more drilling. I can see now whey it was that Capt. Gunning said the enlisted personnel in the T.C. is the highest in the army but I don’t see for the life of me where he got the idea in his head that we would go over in a month or even three months. His confidential information must have been wrong.

I had a funny joke come in a letter the other day. Aunt Levania wanted to know how it felt to ride in a tank. I have seen one at close range. They look like the one on the envelope but it would have been as much as my life is worth to have got in. She also asked me to send a list of things I needed. I just send a bundle of clothes home and am thinking of sending some more stuff home. Please don’t give me a surprise by sending me something.

I now know what bare necessities are and have found out that the expressions means half the things you bring from home and then the Lieut wants to know what you are doing with so much junk lying around.

But after all and in spite of everything I am feeling better every day. I don’t know whether I am putting on weight or not. Haven’t had an opportunity to weight but I am putting on a little muscle and gaining endurance. You cautioned me against smoking too much. I am not smoking very much now about half as much as I did before I came in. That remind me I am out of cigarettes. (You don’t have to take care of them.)

When I was going to the machine gun school one of the lieutenants bet me a package of cigarettes I wouldn’t hit the target five times out of twenty from a moving trailer. I just did manage to luck five hits. (Haven’t got the smokes yet.)

We moved tents yesterday. Put all the fellows the same heighth in the same tent. We worked from one o’clock to eight thirty getting ours in decent shape and still it needs about a days work from all of us. Will send you some views of the camp the first time I go to town.

Haven’t seen Wellborn for two or three weeks. He went to the last officers training school. Don’t know whether he got his commission or not. From now on the T.C. will furnish its own officers. No outsiders are allowed to attend the training camps.

A fellow in the next tent just mentioned that today is the fourth anniversary of the War. Up at the end of the company street an officer has a phonograph going at full speed has kept it on for an hour with intermissions only for changing records. Wish he would stop. If he wasn’t an officer I would like to tell him a few things
1)	What I think of a man who would own a cheap phonograph
2)	What poor taste the person used who selected the records
3)	A phonograph needs at least twenty four hours rest every day.

These two incidents illustrate as well as I know how camp life. It is nothing more than a row of tents with beds in them, dirt floors, clothes racks, barracks bags, shoes, suitcases, and guns.

Everybody in the company has a mania for being clean. Everyone braves the cold water anywhere from four to seven times a week. So you see we keep clean. I did my washing this morning which was, four suits of underwear, three pairs of socks, one pair of leggings, two pairs of trousers, a belt, two towels, and one handkerchief. I also washed clothes last Thursday. You can readily see that I can easily make my living by taking in washing.

Write when you have time. How did your Red Cross drive come out. How is Togo.

Love,
Son

Have the film developed and see what you can see
Had to fold paper to fit envelope.

Macon, Miss.
March 21, 1919

My precious boy:

The souvenirs you sent your Papa came Thurs. and he was tickled to death. We all are so interested in them and want to know their history-especially the spoon and fork.

I think the vases made of the shells are beautiful and we all appreciated them so much. Have been getting letters from you each Tuesday when I hear from the others. Wrote you so many times last week that I really haven’t much to tell.

Thursday, we went to aid meeting at Mrs. Warren Stewart’s and she served such beautiful refreshments and they were so good too.

Friday, Allie Jr. carried me and H.L. to Mama’s. Hall came the day before. I could not stay the night as I had set my incubators.

I can’t see why you do not write Hal and Bro Joe, when you know they are so interested in you and would appreciate a letter so much.

Allie Jr. carried Marcelle Glen to the dance in Macon Friday night. You know she is Mrs. Hunter’s cousin. Beatty Carothers came down for the dance and came out to spend the remainder of the night with Allie. We enjoyed having him so much. He got his ankle broken at Leon Springs so did not get to go across. He thinks Uncle Sam will probably compensate him by giving him 4 years at Cornell. He seemed very much interested in your souvenirs and sent you his best regards.

Hallie Lee is broiling some sausage that with [] is our supper. Allie Jr. playing “When you and I were Young Maggie.” Papa reading. So that is how we are spending the time. All of the girls will be here next Sunday and how happy we would be if you could only come too.

We all went to S.S. today and everyone seemed so interested. Mary Alice had invited us several days ago to take dinner with them today. We did so and had such a pleasant day. Mr. and Mrs. Neville were there too. Mary A. served a lovely dinner, oyster soup, turkey, roll, cranberries and asparagus on toast, creamed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, coffee, apple salad, and gelatin with bananas and whipped cream. She said she had the turkey for your Papa.

I got home and found both incubators high, one not much, not enough to hurt, but large one was real high, so am afraid I paid right dearly for my pleasure today.

Mr. Fox, the Yankee boy who bought the Yates place was out today. He seems to be real nice and looks like Jim Robert. Major Robert now. He is still at Camp Pike and was taking dancing lessons when last I heard of him.

Allie Jr. is going to help Tom Baggers [brake] some hay tomorrow. Allie is going to town, Hallie Lee to school, and I will try to garden some.

I shall certainly miss old Uncle George. He was a good old man and I liked him. Papa showed Zak those shells and he said “it looked to him lak dey would kill everything.”

Mr. McLelive gave us some early corn so I want to get that planted too tomorrow. If Allie would just have the ground fixed, I could have it planted.

Dora [Eveline?] came to the dance, so of course, Boswell was happy. This is certainly a very scattering letter, that I haven’t any means to tell, so when I think of something to write, I just put it down.

You know Addie, Santo’s sister-in-law is my cook. She has improved so much that she is a really good one now. Her biscuits are perfectly delightful.

Aunt Ada comes over real often now. Just for a few minutes, she always asks about you.

[*too faded to read*] Papa’s 55th birthday. I have saved on turkey to have then. “When you come back and you will come back.” We will celebrate it some way. Well this chat has certainly not seemed very interesting so I’ll tell you “good bye”

Pleasant dreams and may they be of home and soon come true. A goodnight kiss and a real hard hug and squeeze.

From,
