Thank you for your letter and I sincerely hope that the "summer workers" will leave soon. Even the colored people are pretty "fed up" with them. They are nothing but trouble makers, in any way that it can be done. I understand that two of the group here are children of known communists, and I am not surprised at this at all.
It seems strange that the National Council of [Churches?], a presumably religious organization, should be guilty of promoting such agitations. Our church is taking steps to see that no farther contributions to this outfit are made, but it takes time to correct these things.
Again thanking you for your efforts on our behalf.

Dear Friend,
We are sure that you are aware of the gross injustices perpetrated on
American citizens in the st.ate of Mississippi. This sUDJDer, massive
efforts are being me.de to deny basic rights to thousands who are trying
to peacefully change an intolerable situation.
It is most important that Americans become aware of the facts. Towards that
that end, a special hearing will be held on~y, June 8, 12§1+ at
the National Theatre from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
The purpose and background of this event is described in the enclosed
mimeographed material.

If you feel that this is impDrtant, please help by doing one or two
things:
(a) Announce the hearing from your pulpit
(b} Urge your teacbers and pa.rents to bring _groups of students
to the .bearing.
Thank you so much!

Sincerely,

~)~
Mike Thelvell, Director
.Washington, D. C.

Washington Hearings on Mississippi

We plan to have a panel of nationally prominent and respected
persons listen to testimony from civil rights workers and local
Mississippi residents concerning the violation of civil rights in
that state.

We are asking the panel to issue a plea to President

Johnson and to the Nation that the rights and lives or our workers
in Mississippi be protected.
A delegation is now attempting to secure an

appointment with

President Johnson to present to him the result of these hearings
and to ask certain actions of the President.
The Chief Executive will be asked to:

1. Meet with Governor Johnson of Mississippi and extract
from Governor Johnson the pledge that he will call together all state and local law enforcement leaders and
lay down certain ground rules for the summer.

Under

these rules the following act1vities .w111 not only be
permitted, but will he protected:

peaceful, orderly

picketing; voter reg1strat1~n; orderly distribution of
leaflets; peaceful assembly; freedom or inter-racial
groups to live in the Negro communities and to move
around the state without molestation.
2.

President Johnson will be asked to inform the Governor
that these are clearly established constitutional rights
which the federal government has the responsibility to
protect, and that if the Governor will not do this, the
federal government

will, before the summer, take specific

action to do this.
We plan to take t he se i ssues to the country in the form of
\.

~~-rtisements in major newspapers.

These advertisements will

~u.tl.1.ne the situati.on, point out that there is danger of widespread

v~aien~e in Mississippi this summer and that innocent lives may

be lost unless the Constitution of the country 1s enforced there.
There ~s n0 ~uestion that our volunteers have every moral and

legal right to go into Mississippi peacefully.

The job of educa-

tibn and ~ommunity improvement that they will be attempting in

that State ls something that our society should have done a long

Hon.John Stennis
United States Senator
Committee on Armed Services
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Stennis:
I very much appreciate your letter of December 12 and
can agree heantily with you that we have many, many,
problems facing us in Mississippi. We here, in the
small county of Issaquena (the smallest county in the
State) are much concerned about the white trash from
the North who have moved in our midst and ltting very
openly with the ne gro boys and men. So many of our
good citizens both colored and white would like to
have them move back to the North 8.lld let us lave in
peace and harmony once again.
If there is anything that you, as one of our great
statesma, can do to help us I would be most greatful.
May I take this opportuni :;~r to wish you a very prosperous
1965 and may God be your help ma the many decisions
which you will have to make in the coming years.
Sincerely your friaad,
~J
