ADDRESS BEFORE THE LITERARY SOCIETIES BY SENATOR JAMES L. ALCORN.
At eight o'clock p.m. on Wednesday evening the Literary Societies assembled in the chapel to listen to an address by Senator Alcorn. There were present and occupying seats upon the stage President Revels and the faculty, the Trustee Board, Gov. R. C. Powers, and distinguished members of the Legislature; and the audience was composed largely of ladies and gentlemen who had come from abroad to be present at the closing exercises of the University. Senator Alcorn was appropriately introduced by Milton Coats, Esq., of Vicksburg, president of one of the societies, and the recipient of the gold medal as the first prize for scholarship and deportment for the year 1872-3. Mr. Coats presented Senator Alcorn as the founder of the institution and its earliest friend and benefactor in a few well-timed and appropriate remarks.
