The Good Little Sister cut off her own tiny finger, fitted it into the lock and succeeded in opening it

Arthur Rackham's Illustration for "The Seven Ravens"

From the Brothers Grimm tale "The Seven Ravens" this illustration is a muted watercolor-and-ink depiction of a young girl kneeling beside a massive, rough-textured door built into a towering rock or tree-like surface. She wears a dark blue dress dotted with white and carries a red tartan bundle and a small wooden stool strapped across her back. Leaning forward, she presses her injured hand and severed finger into the door's small keyhole to open the lock. Swirling blue-green water, scattered rocks, and strange shadowy forms fill the foreground and middle distance, while jagged mountains rise beneath heavy dark clouds. The subdued blues, greens, browns, and grays create a bleak, unsettling fairy-tale landscape.
