Light

Welcome to “Light”, an online exhibition that gathers beautiful artworks that use light in innovative ways. This exhibition explores how different artist use light to bring to life their ideas, emotions, messages, and intentions. This exhibition explores light installations, light structures, sculptures, and infinity rooms. This set of art pieces demonstrates that light is not just a material thing, it also can be used as a medium. These art pieces demonstrate how artists challenge the traditional concept of art.

This exhibition was inspired after seeing an installation by Olaffur Elisson. The installation, "Your Rainbow Panorama," is located at the top of a tall building. Visitors can walk around it and experience different perspectives ofExhibits the city through different glass-colored walls. It was very interesting to see videos and how light can make the installation look amazing.

The Love Forever Room

Kusama, Yayoi

1966-1994

"The Love Forever Room" is an installation stille infinity room where the artist Kusama Yayoi used mirror walls and multi-color lights, which transformed what was a simple room into a magical room. This infinity room pushes visitors to focus not only on their reflections but on other people's reflections, this is a reminder that we are not alone in this world. This installation makes the audience reflect on how they interact with each other daily. This installation is very related to the author's motifs related to psychological experiences. In other words, this is a meditation work in a way.

I decided to use this piece from Kusama because she put a lot of thought into the creation of this installation. She had to figure out how to install the mirror so you would have a glance at others' reflections while looking at yourself, and she thought of what could this do to her audience.

The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away

Kusama, Yayoi

2013

"The Souls of Million of Light Years Away" is an installation infinity room style made by Yayoi Kusama. Made with mirrored walls, and hanging lights at different heights. This room gives the feeling of being in space, because of the light and the quietness, and finally makes people feel surrounded by stars. The author made this room to make people think about time, themselves, and others that surround them and how they can just leave at any time they need to. This installation invites visitors to slow down and reflect, this piece reflects Kusama's motifs exploring some psychological experiences, peace, and time.

I decided to use this piece of Kusama, because this context of space and time is beautiful the way she brought this idea to life, I believe that this is one of the most beautiful works from this artist.

The Weather Project

Eliasson, Olafur

2003

"The Weather Project" Is a large-scale installation by Olafur Eliasson that took over the Turbine Hall of Tate Modern. Eliasson created a very bright sun with mirrors on the ceiling. He also added an artificial mist in the air. Eliasson created an outside location inside the building, which for some visitors would make them feel nostalgic. Eliasson's intentions with this piece were to address climate change, and also to see how others would interact with manmade nature. People who visited this installation seemed to enjoy lying down to admire the piece and hang out with friends under the light of the manmade sun.

I chose to include this piece in my exhibition because when I saw the pictures of the piece it gave a nostalgic feeling, and it kind of reminded me of the beach. This piece also made me think that I do not need to visit a museum to observe a fake sun I should be able to go out and enjoy the sun, and that we should be preserving nature in a better way.

Kaleidoscope for different perspectives

Eliasson, Olafur

2024

This installation, created by Olafur Eliasson, invites the audience to see the world differently, literally and metaphorically. The first thing that the audience might think is that it is a strange telescope, but when they look inside, they will be impressed with a beautiful image full of geometric shapes that change depending on the light of the room and the angle at which the viewers look through the Kaleidoscope.

What I enjoy about this piece is the fact that it invites the audience to look for different perspectives, that change the view of things. This factor also reminds the audience that everything in life is not fixed, and things can change with simple movements, so we can enjoy the movement before it changes. For this reason, I choose to use this piece from Olafur Eliasson.

Breathing Earth Sphere

Olafur, Eliasson

2024

"Breathing Earth Sphere" by Eliasson Olafur is a piece that uses a dome and a spherical underground room, that has natural light that comes from the upper part of the installation, Eliasson used lava stones to give some color and life to the sphere. This installation pushes the visitors to think about the art and its rhythm. Eliasson created this piece because he noticed how broken the human relationship with nature is. His goal was to encourage a ship from our perspective.

I love that this installation even though it is an inside room, it really gives the audience that feeling of being outside. It is a very inspirational piece that pushes the audience to look for a change.

Golden Waters

Amoros, Grimanesa

2015

"Golden Waters" Is an installation made by Grimanesa Amoros with custom LED lights made by the artist. Amoros created this piece was meant to unify in a way to modern architecture and water which a very vital thing for us. Amoros took inspiration from the ancient water canals of the Puebloan civilization. This piece sends the audience a message of vitality and the importance of water.

I chose to use this sculpture from Grimanesa Amoros because of the message and how it makes the audience stop and reflect on the importance of certain things like water is essential for us. I also really like that it combines modern buildings and something as ancient as water.

Hedera

Amoros, Grimanesa

2018

"Hedera" by Grimanesa Amoros, in this installation Amoros uses custom light that is very characteristic of her art pieces. This futuristic looks almost like a circus tent. Amoros made this piece thinking about climbing nature combining it with technology and the future in fact Hedera is Latin for Ivy. This combination of technology and the concept of nature has the purpose of immersing in the experience of viewing and experiencing her artwork.

I chose to include this piece because of the way that she incorporates technology and light in her pieces which have a deeper meaning than just a bunch of lights. I like how everything she does connects light concepts to what I would consider ancient or nature. For me it also says that nature is a powerful thing.

Alta Pink

Turrell, James

1968

"Alta Pink" by James Turrell is one of the most iconic pieces made by this artist that uses lights to give the audience the allution of a 3D pyramid. The intense pink color draws the audience's attention. This piece evokes a feeling of steadiness and calmness. Another way that the audience might interpret it as a special almost out-of-this-world setting, is because of the way that the lights are set.

I choose to use this piece from James Turrell because it evokes a calming feeling, and in some way a little futuristic in some way.

Within Without

Turrell, James

2010

"Within Without" By James Turrell is an architectural chamber open to the sky. This installation creates an ambiance perfect for the audience to have a moment interacting with light, time, and space. This installation emits an ancient place that has been preserved in time to connect with outer space. The simple aperture on the ceiling becomes an important aspect of this installation because it creates different intensities of the light, and also because it is the only source of light for this installation.

I choose to use this piece made by Turrell has a heavenly setting, that even with only pictures takes me to a place that gives me peace. It is also highly interesting how this piece of architectural art also has a futuristic vibe to it. It is very interesting to see how this artist uses light as a tool to make his pieces unique.

Amrta

Turrel, James

2011

"Amrta" an installation by James Turrell, this installation invites the audience to experience to meditate. Turrell made sure that this space felt like a peaceful, safe, space. These characteristics can create a proper environment for people to reflect on themselves. The artist uses the light to give the space a timeless effect, that also helps the audience to organize their thoughts.

I chose to use this piece made by Turrell because it is interesting how the artist creates space that can make the audience reflect on themselves. He plays with the light for example the light has a small pulsation movement, like a breathing motion, which in my opinion helps the audience to breathe simultaneously into the light.

Risen Blue

Knapp, Stephen

2004

"Risen Blue" By Stephen Knapp is an installation made using crystals of different colors to create a beautiful light painting. Even though this is a minimalistic piece, it creates a complex composition. Knapp demonstrates with installations like this one that light can be used as a medium and not only as a physical thing, He does such a good job with this piece that the lines of the crystal and the metal pieces blend with the light painting.

I chose to use this piece by Knapp because it is a very amusing fact that this piece was made only with crystal, metal, and light.

Vivace

Kenapp, Stephen

2004

"Vivace" by Stephen Kenapp is an installation or light painting, made with colored crystals, light, and metal. Creates geometrical shapes of different colors and sizes. The title Vivace means lively, and the audience can see how much life this minimalistic installation amazes those who see it.

I choose to use this installation because, depending on the perspective of the audience the painting changes, making it mobile and never static. Also, I have this feeling that this painting has a very magnetic energy that traps you.

False Prophet

Knapp, Stephen

2004

"False Prophet" by Stephen Kenapp is an example of the most iconic pieces made by Kenapp, It is a very sober, elegant piece compared to other pieces such as "Vivace". The title False Prophet adds some personality and uniqueness to this piece. This piece, different from Kenapp's other pieces, creates an allusion that the light breaks and separates into different pieces. This helps with the idea of an unknown force that bends and ruptures things in different ways

I choose to use this piece by Knapp because it is different from the rest of Knapp's pieces, being as I have said before, a little more settled and sober, instead of a fun, colorful piece.

War of the Worlds

Sonnier, Keith

2004

"War of the Worlds" by Keith Sonnier is is art piece that uses neon lights combining them with recycled materials. This piece has a futuristic but vintage feeling to it because of the use of wire and lights. The usage of two different color lights reminds me of the Cold War times since it was the US against communism. This piece challenges the audience and invites them to get closer and pay careful attention to its details.

I chose to include this piece because I believe that a War of Worlds is something that could happen at any moment, because of decisions that are made by the people in power.

Dismantled Weapon

Sonnier, Keith

2004

"Dismantled Weapon" is a piece made by Keith Sonnier. On this piece, Sonnier uses neon lights combined with upcycled material like wire, maybe a TV antenna, and other materials. Sonnier made those objects look like a dismantled weapon, but because it has been dismantled, it holds no power. The usage of the lights creates a softer picture of what used to be a destructive tool.

I choose this piece of Sonnier because he guides his audience to see certain objects differently. Sonnier also addresses in some way the violence that its around the world.

Meeting You Halfway

McCall, Anthony

2009

"Meeting You Halfway" by McCall is an installation that uses the light of a projector and a fug machine that create a dream-like setting. McCall created this piece so that the audience becomes one with the piece by interacting with it. The title "Meeting You Halfway" refers to the audience's interaction with the piece since from the moment the person starts interacting, beams, and lines are created, which is different for each of them.

I chose to include this piece from Anthony McCall because this piece seems like something I would only see in a dream. It is also something like I used to imagine dying would be.

"Between You and I" by Anthony McCall is an installation that consists of light and a mist environment. Invites the audience to interact and iterpt the lighth beam that create geometric shapes. It also pushes people to see those others that are in the same room.It makes think about the connection that we share with other even though invisible it still there.

I decided to use this pece by McCall because for me it is so interesting the composition of this piece.

Awakening

TeamLab

2024

"Awakening" by TeamLab is an exhibition that uses lights that interact with viewers, The lights are not just lights in this exhibition; they are also a way to give life to the room, creating almost a light ecosystem. The lights move as the viewers do. Viewers help create the art piece as the lights interact with the audience.

I choose to use this piece by TeamLab because it is so amazing seeing how the light acts like it can do whatever it wants, but it decides to follow what others do. It seems almost like a very weird dream.

Megaliths

TeamLab

2024

"Megaliths" by TeamLab is an exhibition that uses lights and panels mounted as towers to create a magical setting for viewers. Because of the setup, this installation looks like crystal growing from the ground and ceiling because of the mirror on top. This an interactive installation that is motion activated, meaning that when people pass by the color of the panel and texture will change.

I decided to use this piece by TeamLabs because of how magical it looks, the fact that it is an interactive piece is also very awesome.

Forest of Reasoning Lamps-one

TeamLab

2024

"Forest of Reasoning Lamps-One" by TeamLabs is an installation that uses hanging lamps and mirrors. The lights interact with the viewers when they feel them closer; when the viewers are near the lights, they change color, and their intensity also changes. It makes the viewers think of the lights as having some kind of conscience, which makes them able to react to them.

I chose this piece because it reminded me so much of the movie Entangled. This movie has a scene with a lot of floating lanterns. I also thought that it was cool that the lights could do all that on their own.
