Destitute Colored People.

Investigation has proven that there are a large number of colored people in this city who have not the means to comfortably keep themselves during the winter. It has been necessary for them to solicit aid from the county, and in addition to the county's aid numbers of individuals have contributed to their relief. A number of colored citizens met last evening at George Charles' store and the result was the issuing of the following call.

WHEREAS, We learn with sadness, through the columns of the daily papers of this city, that there are several hundred of our citizens in destitute circumstances, and are being cared for by the county commissioners, who appeal to the public for charities in their behalf, and

WHEREAS, They are dependent upon such charities alone for a living throughout this hard weather, we feel it our duty as brothers of the same race, to come to the help of the said board of commissioners in doing what we can to alleviate the distresses so reported among them.

We, therefore, the undersigned, do form ourselves into a committee and request that the leading colored business men of the city meet in council at Norris hall, corner of First and Monroe streets, on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., to put in prosecution some plan through which assistance may be procured for the suffering and destitute among us.
