Derry Girls Season 1 Episode 6
Dublin Core
Alternative Title
girl in athletic clothes and girls in school uniforms
Description
Derry Girls follows Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), a lovable but self-absorbed teenager, her quirky cousin, Orla (Louisa Harland), friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan) and Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell), and Michelle's cousin, James (Dylan Llewellyn), an Englishman forced to attend an all-girls Catholic school out of concern for his safety. The show takes a hilariously unorthodox approach to presenting the Troubles in Ireland, pumping each episode full of nineties fashion, everyday adolescent adventures, and signs of the British army. The final sequence of season 1 episode 6 is a perfect case study for the spirit of the show. The cuts back and forth between Orla's step aerobics performance at the school talent show and a news report of the latest bombing artistically represent the extremes of joy and fear that characterized the period for many living through it.
