Animals leave behind lots of things in their environments—burrows, footprints…poop. It may sound gross, but all of these things (including poop) can fossilize. Fossilized poop is called a coprolite. Coprolites, as well as burrows and footprints, are what’s known as “trace fossils.” Trace fossils don’t tell us what an animal looked like, instead they show us how the animal behaved. What do you think scientists could learn about an animal by looking at its poop?
