Spotlight Specimen: Cretaceous Oysters

Even though we may not notice it, the Earth is constantly changing. Usually, these changes are so slow that it takes thousands of years for there to be any noticeable differences. Fossils are a record of changes from Earth’s past. You’ll find fossils of these large marine oysters all over northern Mississippi, even though today they’re very far from the ocean. Conversely, scientists have found evidence of land animal and human habitation in the sediment in the Gulf of Mexico. These findings show that Mississippi’s shoreline was at one point much higher and much lower than it is today. Fossils like these oysters help us put together the puzzle of Earth’s past changes.
