Miss Saigon-Maggie Freeman
Miss Saigon is a made-for-stage musical set during the Vietnam War. The musical tells the story of Chris, an American GI stationed in Vietnam, and Kim, a Vietnamese orphan. Kim resorts to prostitution to provide for herself, and on her first night as a sex worker she is paid to spend the night with Chris. After spending the night together, the pair confess their love to one another and Chris promises to bring Kim back to the United States with him. Shortly after this promise is made, Chris is unexpectedly whisked back to the United States before he can arrange for Kim to come with him. Kim discovers that she is pregnant with Chris’s child after he goes back to the United States, and she is forced to raise the child on her own. Three years go by, and Kim is still patiently waiting for Chris to return and for their family to be whole. In the meantime, Chris has married an American woman but is still plagued by the grief of leaving Kim behind. Eventually, Chris finds out that Kim is still alive and that she conceived a child. He goes to Vietnam with his wife to speak with Kim. Kim wants her child to live in America with Chris and his wife, but the couple refuses to separate the child from his mother. In an act of desperation, Kim commits suicide, ensuring that Chris will take their son to America and give him a better life. The phenomenon of American soldiers concieving children with Vietnames women during the Vietnam war was common, and this musical highlights the hardships that these children and their mothers had to endure.
