Born: c. 1850 in Mississippi

(Surname also spelled Matthews) Teacher and attorney, admitted to the bar in 1874. Resigned his seat in the legislature in December of 1874 to accept a position as County Superintendent of Education. Appointed mail agent between Louisville and Nashville, 1883. Represented Mississippi at the 1884 Republican National Convention in Chicago.

Married Alice M. Carter in Panola County on March 6, 1873. Listed on the 1880 census in Sardis with Alice, two daughters, and brother Elias W. Mathews, also a teacher.
